Discovery: a note from our founder, ceo and creative director, Patti

patti-headshot

We move sometimes quite quickly through summer, and then that ripe old guy August (picture him: a warm, wise elder) comes around again, with barely any notice, signaling the end of the season. What to do, dear friend August? We were having so much fun (we wink, dusting the sand off our feet)...

Take stock. The days are still long, and a little planning goes a long way to usher in a new season of possibilities. So, we appraise our resources, and potential. We understand what we have, and envision our future - what we want to live the life we’ve imagined. As a partner, friend, or parent, to give the most we can? This is good work.

The time is now, says dear old August. Take inventory, and fill your heart, mind and life with the things that are missing, the things you love that bring you joy, and the things you simply need more of. A new, wonderful season is upon us, and we are grateful in our preparation! Thank you August , for all your gifts (sand and surf and sun included), and for reminding
us to prepare for our highest potential in the season(s) ahead.

Looking forward with love, Patti

Our Flagship in Summerland

Did you know our Summerland boutique, is turning 2 years old! (How time flies when you’re having fun.) Located in the charming and locally beloved space that once housed the town’s original post office, Waxing Poetic in Summerland sets the tone for an intimate space that transports you to a coastal boutique in Italy. With a mix of custom woodwork, artifacts, a wall installation of “frescopauged” brand history in the form of a family tree, and Italian marble floors, set in our recognizable rhombus pattern. Large glass doors allow for a gorgeous view of downtown Summerland, with access to our adjoining, cozy deck overlooking the ocean. All who visit looking for a truly special gift in a friendly setting are pleased to take their time, shop and explore every detail.Waxing Poetic SummerlandWaxing Poetic SummerlandWaxing Poetic Summerland Share in the festivities with us all weekend and come on by the Summerland boutique where you can get a special gift with purchase, and enter for a chance to win the Transformative Dragonfly pendant. A note (from the heart) of WP founder, Patti

favorite-place

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook (okay, not just a friend, but our lovely poet Brianna), and it really resonated with me. Yes, summer is a time for travel and new experiences, and I also realized how much discovery is a part of what we do at Waxing Poetic.

The unknown. The untapped. The undiscovered.

This is what we love so much about the process of building a Waxing Poetic necklace (or bracelet). It is about never having been there... and ending up with a new favorite. Something precious, something that takes time to know, and feel.

A discovery to experience, to keep or to share.

We are each on our own beautiful journey, and we are so very thankful to be sharing (and celebrating) ours with you.

Wishing you much love and abundance this summer and beyond,

Patti

Poetic Picnic

The Waxing Poetic First Annual Poetic Picnic was a success! To celebrate summer, family, and loved ones, we held a little BBQ soiree with potluck and a cookie contest (see winning recipes below). Connection is a core value here at WP, and we encourage friendships to grow both within and outside of our company.

We just really love a good party too. poetic-picnic-crayonspoetic-picnic-manning-parkpoetic-picnic-wppoetic-picnic-live-musicpoetic-picnic-employeespoetic-picnic-cookie-contest-winnerspoetic-picnic-jacobpoetic-picnic-joypoetic-picnic-kadypoetic-picnic-kidpoetic-picnic-bellapoetic-picnic-childrenpoetic-picnic-kidspoetic-picnic-lulu-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1/4 C Brown sugar
1 tbsp All purpose flour

For the cookies:
1 C Unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened
3/4 C Granulated sugar
3/4 C Brown sugar
2 Large eggs
2 tsp Pure vanilla extract
2 tsp Maple syrup
2 1/4 C All purpose flour

1/4 tsp Nutmeg
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Apple pie spice
3/4 C Walnuts
1 pk Kraft Caramel squares

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350°

2. Start by chopping apples into small pieces, about the size of a dime. You will need 2-3 apples. In a separate bowl, combine sugar and flour and stir to coat apples. Set aside.

3. Allow butter to come to room temperature. Combine with both granulated sugar and brown sugar and beat on medium speed for several minutes until very well combined. Mixture should be smooth

4. Add eggs, one at a time and beat until well mixed. Add vanilla extract and maple syrup and mix into batter after both eggs have been added.

5. Combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl: flour, vanilla pudding mix, oats, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and apple pie spice. Slowly add dry ingredients to the batter and mix on medium speed until combined.

6. Slowly add apples and walnuts to dough and beat on low speed just until combined.

7. Line cookie sheet with baking mat or parchment paper

8. Using a medium sized cooking scoop (about 3 tablespoons), place dough on cookie sheet. Use your thumb to press into the middle of the dough ball to make a hole. Place an unwrapped caramel in the middle. Use your fingers to pinch the edges back together so that caramel is fully covered with cookie dough.

9. Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes until the edges turn light brown. Allow to cool on the pan for several minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

10. Store in an airtight container for up to three days. Reheat in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to soften caramel.

The King

Best twist on tradition Jessica, photographer/creative teamTOTAL TIME:

13 hr 10 min Prep: 30 min Inactive Prep: 12 hr Cook: 40 min

YIELD: about 24 cookie cups

INGREDIENTS:
10 slices bacon
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 sticks (8 ounces) unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chunks
1/2 cup chopped salted peanuts
1/2 cup sweet dried banana chips, roughly chopped

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cook the bacon in a skillet until crisp, then drain on paper towels. Once the bacon is cool, roughly chop it (you should have about 1/2 cup).

2. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. In a large bowl, beat the butter, mayonnaise and sugars with a mixer at medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until well blended. Add the peanut butter and vanilla and beat until combined.

3. At low speed, add the flour mixture in batches, beating until just combined. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the chocolate chunks, bacon, peanuts and banana chips. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

4. Position the racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line 2 muffin tins with paper liners.

5. Fill the muffin tins about halfway full with the batter (a 2-inch, 2-ounce ice cream scoop gives you just about the perfect amount, and helps prevent spilling).

6. Bake until the tops are slightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. (Keep in mind that the cookies won't rise and form a dome like a cupcake.) Let cool in the muffin tins on wire racks for about 10 minutes, then unmold the cookie cups and transfer them to the racks to cool completely.

5 ideas for making your workspace more poetic

everlasting cross, ensemble necklace

You may be at your desk all day, working the day away and by the time you realize it, you didn’t take one moment for yourself it leaves you feeling less than relaxed. Well, here are 5 ideas to create a poetic workspace for yourself to ease the feelings of your day becoming a time warp.

1. Introduce your favorite scent. Fresh flowers or a favorite candle can clear your mind, soothe and lift your spirits. (We recommend being courteous to fellow co-workers in the space and choosing a light scent that can be enjoyed by many.)

2. Listen to your favorite music while you work. It can help a creativity breakthrough, be a creativity booster / mood enhancer and lets face it- music is fantastic and sometimes it feels really good to get lost in the music, put your head down and get through your workload.

3. Take breaks, Take breaks, Take breaks. The better condition your mind is in, the more productive and patient you will be. Everyone, no matter how busy their day may be, has time to take a few minutes to get fresh air, a sip of water, or meet a friend for coffee mid day. Give yourself the opportunity to take notice of your surroundings and be aware.

4. Write in your journal for a few minutes each day. To say something that is bothering you, to make a list, to write a love note to yourself (or someone else) Keeping in check with your thoughts throughout the day will keep you engaged in the events taking place around you and allow you to feel more relaxed when the day is over, versus carrying all of the weight on your shoulders.

5. Find something to be hopeful and thankful for each day, and remind yourself to take a moment and reflect on your many blessings and gratitude

Girls Inc. Externship at Waxing Poetic

Waxing Poetic is company built by and for, women. So, when Girls' Inc. approached us with the idea to work with a young woman in our community, we jumped at the opportunity. Alisa, our extern, was so eager to learn the ins and outs about how WP is operated, and did a fantastic job learning the ropes.

We took her throughout the process of how our products come to life, from design, to purchasing, to sales and marketing and the retail floor. Alisa's favorite department was the inventory and purchasing (she is a Math whiz and loves data). She was able to track an order, which we then gifted to her on her last day (surprise!).

We feel deeply and strongly about encouraging women to be business savvy, nurture their entrepreneurial instincts, and forge a drive within them for success and independence. We are confident that this bright, lovely young lady will go far, and on to do great great things.

A note from Alisa

My name is Alisa Lemere, I am 15 years old and I am an extern at Waxing Poetic. My 4 weeks at waxing poetic have been an amazing experience. I have learned about all the components that make a successful business function. I got to spend time with the sales team, design team, accountants, customer service team, and many other wonderful people.

My favorite part about my time here was working with the Purchasing Team, Lisa and Ashley. I enjoyed entering in inventory and purchasing the products that are needed. Overall this experience has been amazing and I loved being a part of this awesome company.

Ella’s Poetic Style

“Waxing Poetic gifts come from people you love, people who know you, people who want to give you something individual and special that you will cherish forever.”

Ella Walker (“the Eldest of three”, as she so eloquently stated) is a young woman living in the city and finding the balance of work life and making time for her sisters, family, friends, pup Caddy, and all the wonderfulness life has to offer. Here she talks about what she loves about Waxing Poetic, and what it feels like to receive waxing poetic as a gift.

When we interviewed each sister, we asked them the same 5 questions.
Here are Ella’s answers.

1. What would you call your personal style?
i.e. Preppy, Bohemian, Glam etc.

I can’t really generalize my style because its constantly changing, and I feel like by calling it something other then “Ella’s Style” I am trying too hard to fit into that category. So I guess “Ella’s Style” is current, comfortable, and strictly unique to me. Tamsyn tries to give me style advice, but I am rarely comfortable wearing what she suggests because that’s her style.

2. Who is your greatest style icon?

Blake Lively, I wish she was my best friend. I think we’d get along swimmingly.

3. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one thing with you, what would it be?

My dog, Harry Potter series, knitting supplies, and my audiobook collection. Its basically a vacation.

4. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

David Attenborough, the gentleman who does the narration for every successful nature show ever.

5. What is your favorite quote or line of Poetry?

“Accendit cantu”

latin for “rise up singing”

Georgie Walker’s Poetic Style

“It’s (Waxing Poetic) such a signature and unique look,
it’s very special which is the greatest thing about it.”

Georgie Walker, the middle sister and known as the adventurer, talks about what her sisters have given her over the years, how she wears Waxing Poetic and the feelings these pieces evoke in her heart every time she puts them on.

When we interviewed each sister, we asked them the same 5 questions.
Here are Georgie’s answers.

1. What would you call your personal style?
i.e. Preppy, Bohemian, Glam etc.

Somewhere between bohemian and relaxed classic… I like my tribal patterns, complicated styles and jewelry but my go to outfit is jeans and t-shirt.

2. Who is your greatest style icon?

I like what Olivia Wilde wears…

3. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one thing with you, what would it be?

A tub of peanut butter // V8 juice // a wide brimmed straw hat

4. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

My great-great grandchild.

5. What is your favorite quote or line of Poetry?

“If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” - Einstein
